How to restore a period front door by dip stripping

Over the past 30 years, we have painted and restored more period front doors than we can count! One method we use for painting and restoring doors is by dip stripping.

In this post, we show you the various stages that go into restoring period front doors, from being stripped by dipping, to being finished in eggshell.

Step 1

First, we have the period door dip stripped back to the wood

Step 2

Once this is done, this is followed by the first coat of aluminum primer

Step 3

Next, the door is sanded and filled

Step 4

This is then followed by the first layer of the undercoat and then there is more flush-filling

Step 5

The door is then sanded and a spot undercoat is applied. We then let this dry and then it is caulked again

Step 6

After this, we apply another undercoat

Step 7

Once the undercoat is dry the final coat is applied. In this example, the door is finished in eggshell. The cleaned and restored brasses are then added back to the door.

This is a lot of work but I think you will agree that the finished door is fantastic!

It is still the original door, which is far more desirable on a period property, especially when it looks this good.
