Step-by-step instructions for painting new plaster
Our approach to working on this extension involved several stages:
- We rubbed the new plasterwork down first to ensure a smooth, even surface. This takes time before you start, but it gives a much better finish at the end so it is worth the effort and time.
- Once this was complete, we then applied a primer coat to seal the walls. When working on raw plaster, this is essential for preparing the newly plastered walls for painting.
- With that complete, we then painted the ceiling and walls with matt emulsion paint, using a combination of brushes and rollers.
- We then applied a second coat after that had dried.
What paint to use on new plaster?
In this particular case, our clients chose emulsion paint. However, there are other options available to you if you are painting a kitchen or bathroom.
We also recommend that vinyl silk or soft sheen emulsion paints are used for several reasons. The most important of these is for family homes as they are easier to clean, so if a chocolate covered handprint does go on a wall, it can easily be cleaned off with a damp cloth!
